Veja alguns exemplos de locuções verbais in Portuguese.

esquecer de fazer algo - to forget to do something
estar com vontade de fazer algo - to feel like doing something
esforçar-se para fazer algo - to endeavor to do something

aprender a fazer algo - to learn to do something
aprender a explicar algo - to learn to explain something
aprender a cozinhar algo - to learn to cook something
aprender a preparar algo - to learn to make something

parar de fazer algo - to stop doing something
parar de estudar algo - to stop studying something
parar de dizer algo - to stop saying something
parar de falar algo - to stop speaking something

A Simple Tecnique for those Who Want to Learn How Translate Correctly into English

Today you will learn a very simple technique to translate any sentence in Portuguese into English without you need to look up each word in a bilingual dictionary (English-Portuguese and Portuguese-English dictionary).

This technique consists of using made-up structures in Portuguese with their translations into English. These made-up structures are formed through the combination of verbs with other other verbs in Portuguese, such as: tentar fazer algo (to try to do something), começar a falar algo (to start to speak something ou to start speaking something), and esperar alguém dizer algo (to wait somebody to say something).

Here  is a list of verb patterns or structures in the infinitive used in the making of verb phrases to facilitate the translation of your Portuguese texts into English.

Before learning each one of these verb patterns, you need to understand what a verb phrase is.

A verb phrase is the combination of an auxiliary verb or a verb with another verb (main verb). See some examples of verb phrase in Portuguese.

esquecer de fazer algo - to forget to do something
estar com vontade de fazer algo - to feel like doing something
esforçar-se para fazer algo - to endeavor to do something

Note that in these structures the first verbs (esquecer de, estar com vontade de, and esforçar-se para) come before the verb fazer algo forming verb phrases.

When using the list of verb phrases prepared here, you should always remember they are just verb patterns or structures that will help you to make other sentences, and thus you have to master the following tenchnique.

The first verb of the verb phrases is the structure you will use to make other sentences. If you, for instance, want to make new sentences with the structure aprender a fazer algo or parar de fazer algo, you will need only change fazer algo and replace it for another verb. The same technique will be used to form sentences in English.

aprender a fazer algo - to learn to do something
aprender a explicar algo - to learn to explain something
aprender a cozinhar algo - to learn to cook something
aprender a preparar algo - to learn to make something

parar de fazer algo - to stop doing something
parar de estudar algo - to stop studying something
parar de dizer algo - to stop saying something
parar de falar algo - to stop speaking something

One thing you have to learn is to replace the indefinite pronouns alguém (somebody), algo (something) and algum lugar (some place, somewhere) which appear in the verb phrases for other words. Alguém (somebody) and algo (something) can be replaced for a personal object pronoun or noun, and algum lugar (some place, somewhere) for nouns that indicate place or geographical location. However, alguém (somebody) may only be replaced for personal object pronouns and nouns referring to people, and algo for adverb, adverbial, or personal object pronouns and nouns that indicate animals, things, feelings, qualities, inanimate beings or abstract qualities.
